Flowing from the north-west to the south-east the Severn, England’s longest river, bisects Shropshire and in the past provided the county with power for industry. But really this is a rural county rich in rolling acres of pasture and scattered with timbered and sandstone hamlets and villages.
Shropshire is largely free from commuting pressures, despite the M54 which has made the county more accessible to Birmingham and the south. The most popular areas are around Ludlow, the Clun Valley, Much Wenlock and Leintwardine.
